  2 Chronicles 17-18

17:1 Jehoshaphat his son succeeded him as king and strengthened himself against Israel.
17:2 He stationed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah and put garrisons in Judah and in the towns of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.
17:3 The LORD was with Jehoshaphat because in his early years he walked in the ways his father David had followed. He did not consult the Baals
17:4 but sought the God of his father and followed his commands rather than the practices of Israel.
17:5 The LORD established the kingdom under his control; and all Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, so that he had great wealth and honor.
17:6 His heart was devoted to the ways of the LORD; furthermore, he removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah.
17:7 In the third year of his reign he sent his officials Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel and Micaiah to teach in the towns of Judah.
17:8 With them were certain Levites-- Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah and Tob-Adonijah-- and the priests Elishama and Jehoram.
17:9 They taught throughout Judah, taking with them the Book of the Law of the LORD; they went around to all the towns of Judah and taught the people.
17:10 The fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, so that they did not make war with Jehoshaphat.
17:11 Some Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute, and the Arabs brought him flocks
17:12 Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful; he built forts and store cities in Judah
17:13 and had large supplies in the towns of Judah. He also kept experienced fighting men in Jerusalem.
17:14 Their enrollment by families was as follows
17:15 next, Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000;
17:16 next, Amasiah son of Zicri, who volunteered himself for the service of the LORD, with 200,000.
17:17 From Benjamin
17:18 next, Jehozabad, with 180,000 men armed for battle.
17:19 These were the men who served the king, besides those he stationed in the fortified cities throughout Judah.
18:1 Now Jehoshaphat had great wealth and honor, and he allied himself with Ahab by marriage.
18:2 Some years later he went down to visit Ahab in Samaria. Ahab slaughtered many sheep and cattle for him and the people with him and urged him to attack Ramoth Gilead.
18:3 Ahab king of Israel asked Jehoshaphat king of Judah, "Will you go with me against Ramoth Gilead?" Jehoshaphat replied, "I am as you are, and my people as your people; we will join you in the war."
18:4 But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, "First seek the counsel of the LORD."
18:5 So the king of Israel brought together the prophets-- four hundred men-- and asked them, "Shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?" "Go," they answered, "for God will give it into the king's hand."
18:6 But Jehoshaphat asked, "Is there not a prophet of the LORD here whom we can inquire of?"
18:7 The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, "There is still one man through whom we can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah." "The king should not say that," Jehoshaphat replied.
18:8 So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, "Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once."
18:9 Dressed in their royal robes, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor by the entrance to the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them.
18:10 Now Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had made iron horns, and he declared, "This is what the LORD says
18:11 All the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. "Attack Ramoth Gilead and be victorious," they said, "for the LORD will give it into the king's hand."
18:12 The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, "Look, as one man the other prophets are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably."
18:13 But Micaiah said, "As surely as the LORD lives, I can tell him only what my God says."
18:14 When he arrived, the king asked him, "Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?" "Attack and be victorious," he answered, "for they will be given into your hand."
18:15 The king said to him, "How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD?"
18:16 Then Micaiah answered, "I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the LORD said, "These people have no master. Let each one go home in peace.""
18:17 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Didn"t I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?"
18:18 Micaiah continued, "Therefore hear the word of the LORD
18:19 And the LORD said, "Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?" "One suggested this, and another that.
18:20 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD and said, "I will entice him." ""By what means?" the LORD asked.
18:21 ""I will go and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets," he said. ""You will succeed in enticing him," said the LORD. "Go and do it."
18:22 "So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you."
18:23 Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped Micaiah in the face. "Which way did the spirit from the LORD go when he went from me to speak to you?" he asked.
18:24 Micaiah replied, "You will find out on the day you go to hide in an inner room."
18:25 The king of Israel then ordered, "Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon the ruler of the city and to Joash the king's son,
18:26 and say, "This is what the king says
18:27 Micaiah declared, "If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me." Then he added, "Mark my words, all you people!"
18:28 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead.
18:29 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "I will enter the battle in disguise, but you wear your royal robes." So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.
18:30 Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders, "Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel."
18:31 When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, "This is the king of Israel." So they turned to attack him, but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him. God drew them away from him,
18:32 for when the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they stopped pursuing him.
18:33 But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the sections of his armor. The king told the chariot driver, "Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I"ve been wounded."
18:34 All day long the battle raged, and the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. Then at sunset he died.

  John  13

13:1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.
13:2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus.
13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
13:4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
13:5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples" feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
13:6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
13:7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."
13:8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
13:9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!"
13:10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you."
13:11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
13:12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them.
13:13 "You call me "Teacher" and "Lord," and rightly so, for that is what I am.
13:14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.
13:15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
13:16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
13:17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
13:18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture
13:19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He.
13:20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me."
13:21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me."
13:22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant.
13:23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.
13:24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means."
13:25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
13:26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.
13:27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him,
13:28 but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
13:29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor.
13:30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
13:31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him.
13:32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
13:33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now
13:34 "A new command I give you
13:35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
13:36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."
13:37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can"t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."
13:38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
