  2 Chronicles 15-16

15:1 The Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded.
15:2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.
15:3 For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law.
15:4 But in their distress they turned to the LORD, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them.
15:5 In those days it was not safe to travel about, for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil.
15:6 One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another, because God was troubling them with every kind of distress.
15:7 But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."
15:8 When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah son of Oded the prophet, he took courage. He removed the detestable idols from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the towns he had captured in the hills of Ephraim. He repaired the altar of the LORD that was in front of the portico of the LORD's temple.
15:9 Then he assembled all Judah and Benjamin and the people from Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon who had settled among them, for large numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the LORD his God was with him.
15:10 They assembled at Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa's reign.
15:11 At that time they sacrificed to the LORD seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep and goats from the plunder they had brought back.
15:12 They entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul.
15:13 All who would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.
15:14 They took an oath to the LORD with loud acclamation, with shouting and with trumpets and horns.
15:15 All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the LORD gave them rest on every side.
15:16 King Asa also deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive Asherah pole. Asa cut the pole down, broke it up and burned it in the Kidron Valley.
15:17 Although he did not remove the high places from Israel, Asa's heart was fully committed [to the LORD] all his life.
15:18 He brought into the temple of God the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.
15:19 There was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa's reign.
16:1 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa's reign Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
16:2 Asa then took the silver and gold out of the treasuries of the LORD's temple and of his own palace and sent it to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus.
16:3 "Let there be a treaty between me and you," he said, "as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me."
16:4 Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. They conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim and all the store cities of Naphtali.
16:5 When Baasha heard this, he stopped building Ramah and abandoned his work.
16:6 Then King Asa brought all the men of Judah, and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been using. With them he built up Geba and Mizpah.
16:7 At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him
16:8 Were not the Cushites and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen? Yet when you relied on the LORD, he delivered them into your hand.
16:9 For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war."
16:10 Asa was angry with the seer because of this; he was so enraged that he put him in prison. At the same time Asa brutally oppressed some of the people.
16:11 The events of Asa's reign, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
16:12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the LORD, but only from the physicians.
16:13 Then in the forty-first year of his reign Asa died and rested with his fathers.
16:14 They buried him in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a bier covered with spices and various blended perfumes, and they made a huge fire in his honor.

  John  12

12:1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
12:2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus" honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
12:3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus" feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
12:4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,
12:5 "Why wasn"t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages."
12:6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
12:7 "Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "[It was intended] that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.
12:8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."
12:9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
12:10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
12:11 for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and putting their faith in him.
12:12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
12:13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!"
12:14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written,
12:15 "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."
12:16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.
12:17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.
12:18 Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him.
12:19 So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!"
12:20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast.
12:21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus."
12:22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
12:23 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
12:24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
12:25 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
12:26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
12:27 "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? "Father, save me from this hour"? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.
12:28 Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."
12:29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
12:30 Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine.
12:31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
12:32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself."
12:33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
12:34 The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, "The Son of Man must be lifted up"? Who is this "Son of Man"?"
12:35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going.
12:36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
12:37 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.
12:38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet
12:39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere
12:40 "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn-- and I would heal them."
12:41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus" glory and spoke about him.
12:42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
12:43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
12:44 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.
12:45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me.
12:46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
12:47 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it.
12:48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.
12:49 For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it.
12:50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."
