  Judges 11-12

11:1 Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute.
11:2 Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. "You are not going to get any inheritance in our family," they said, "because you are the son of another woman."
11:3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a group of adventurers gathered around him and followed him.
11:4 Some time later, when the Ammonites made war on Israel,
11:5 the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.
11:6 "Come," they said, "be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites."
11:7 Jephthah said to them, "Didn"t you hate me and drive me from my father's house? Why do you come to me now, when you"re in trouble?"
11:8 The elders of Gilead said to him, "Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be our head over all who live in Gilead."
11:9 Jephthah answered, "Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the LORD gives them to me-- will I really be your head?"
11:10 The elders of Gilead replied, "The LORD is our witness; we will certainly do as you say."
11:11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the LORD in Mizpah.
11:12 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king with the question
11:13 The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah's messengers, "When Israel came up out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, all the way to the Jordan. Now give it back peaceably."
11:14 Jephthah sent back messengers to the Ammonite king,
11:15 saying
11:16 But when they came up out of Egypt, Israel went through the desert to the Red Sea and on to Kadesh.
11:17 Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, "Give us permission to go through your country," but the king of Edom would not listen. They sent also to the king of Moab, and he refused. So Israel stayed at Kadesh.
11:18 "Next they traveled through the desert, skirted the lands of Edom and Moab, passed along the eastern side of the country of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon. They did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was its border.
11:19 "Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, "Let us pass through your country to our own place."
11:20 Sihon, however, did not trust Israel to pass through his territory. He mustered all his men and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.
11:21 "Then the LORD, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his men into Israel's hands, and they defeated them. Israel took over all the land of the Amorites who lived in that country,
11:22 capturing all of it from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.
11:23 "Now since the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over?
11:24 Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the LORD our God has given us, we will possess.
11:25 Are you better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them?
11:26 For three hundred years Israel occupied Heshbon, Aroer, the surrounding settlements and all the towns along the Arnon. Why didn"t you retake them during that time?
11:27 I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the LORD, the Judge, decide the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites."
11:28 The king of Ammon, however, paid no attention to the message Jephthah sent him.
11:29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.
11:30 And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD
11:31 whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the LORD's, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering."
11:32 Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into his hands.
11:33 He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.
11:34 When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter.
11:35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, "Oh! My daughter! You have made me miserable and wretched, because I have made a vow to the LORD that I cannot break."
11:36 "My father," she replied, "you have given your word to the LORD. Do to me just as you promised, now that the LORD has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites.
11:37 But grant me this one request," she said. "Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry."
11:38 "You may go," he said. And he let her go for two months. She and the girls went into the hills and wept because she would never marry.
11:39 After the two months, she returned to her father and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin. From this comes the Israelite custom
11:40 that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
12:1 The men of Ephraim called out their forces, crossed over to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, "Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We"re going to burn down your house over your head."
12:2 Jephthah answered, "I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn"t save me out of their hands.
12:3 When I saw that you wouldn"t help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?"
12:4 Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, "You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh."
12:5 The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead asked him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he replied, "No,"
12:6 they said, "All right, say "Shibboleth."" If he said, "Sibboleth," because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.
12:7 Jephthah led Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in a town in Gilead.
12:8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem led Israel.
12:9 He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters away in marriage to those outside his clan, and for his sons he brought in thirty young women as wives from outside his clan. Ibzan led Israel seven years.
12:10 Then Ibzan died, and was buried in Bethlehem.
12:11 After him, Elon the Zebulunite led Israel ten years.
12:12 Then Elon died, and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
12:13 After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, led Israel.
12:14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. He led Israel eight years.
12:15 Then Abdon son of Hillel died, and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.

  Luke 6

6:1 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.
6:2 Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?"
6:3 Jesus answered them, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
6:4 He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions."
6:5 Then Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
6:6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled.
6:7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.
6:8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there.
6:9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath
6:10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was completely restored.
6:11 But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
6:12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.
6:13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles
6:14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
6:15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot,
6:16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
6:17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coast of Tyre and Sidon,
6:18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by evil spirits were cured,
6:19 and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.
6:20 Looking at his disciples, he said
6:21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
6:22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
6:23 "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets.
6:24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.
6:25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
6:26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.
6:27 "But I tell you who hear me
6:28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
6:29 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic.
6:30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.
6:31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
6:32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even "sinners" love those who love them.
6:33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even "sinners" do that.
6:34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even "sinners" lend to "sinners," expecting to be repaid in full.
6:35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
6:36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
6:37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
6:39 He also told them this parable
6:40 A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.
6:41 "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
6:42 How can you say to your brother, "Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye," when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
6:43 "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
6:44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.
6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.
6:46 "Why do you call me, "Lord, Lord," and do not do what I say?
6:47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.
6:48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
6:49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete."
