  Job 20-21

20:1 Then Zophar the Naamathite replied
20:2 "My troubled thoughts prompt me to answer because I am greatly disturbed.
20:3 I hear a rebuke that dishonors me, and my understanding inspires me to reply.
20:4 "Surely you know how it has been from of old, ever since man was placed on the earth,
20:5 that the mirth of the wicked is brief, the joy of the godless lasts but a moment.
20:6 Though his pride reaches to the heavens and his head touches the clouds,
20:7 he will perish forever, like his own dung; those who have seen him will say, "Where is he?"
20:8 Like a dream he flies away, no more to be found, banished like a vision of the night.
20:9 The eye that saw him will not see him again; his place will look on him no more.
20:10 His children must make amends to the poor; his own hands must give back his wealth.
20:11 The youthful vigor that fills his bones will lie with him in the dust.
20:12 "Though evil is sweet in his mouth and he hides it under his tongue,
20:13 though he cannot bear to let it go and keeps it in his mouth,
20:14 yet his food will turn sour in his stomach; it will become the venom of serpents within him.
20:15 He will spit out the riches he swallowed; God will make his stomach vomit them up.
20:16 He will suck the poison of serpents; the fangs of an adder will kill him.
20:17 He will not enjoy the streams, the rivers flowing with honey and cream.
20:18 What he toiled for he must give back uneaten; he will not enjoy the profit from his trading.
20:19 For he has oppressed the poor and left them destitute; he has seized houses he did not build.
20:20 "Surely he will have no respite from his craving; he cannot save himself by his treasure.
20:21 Nothing is left for him to devour; his prosperity will not endure.
20:22 In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him; the full force of misery will come upon him.
20:23 When he has filled his belly, God will vent his burning anger against him and rain down his blows upon him.
20:24 Though he flees from an iron weapon, a bronze-tipped arrow pierces him.
20:25 He pulls it out of his back, the gleaming point out of his liver. Terrors will come over him;
20:26 total darkness lies in wait for his treasures. A fire unfanned will consume him and devour what is left in his tent.
20:27 The heavens will expose his guilt; the earth will rise up against him.
20:28 A flood will carry off his house, rushing waters on the day of God's wrath.
20:29 Such is the fate God allots the wicked, the heritage appointed for them by God."
21:1 Then Job replied
21:2 "Listen carefully to my words; let this be the consolation you give me.
21:3 Bear with me while I speak, and after I have spoken, mock on.
21:4 "Is my complaint directed to man? Why should I not be impatient?
21:5 Look at me and be astonished; clap your hand over your mouth.
21:6 When I think about this, I am terrified; trembling seizes my body.
21:7 Why do the wicked live on, growing old and increasing in power?
21:8 They see their children established around them, their offspring before their eyes.
21:9 Their homes are safe and free from fear; the rod of God is not upon them.
21:10 Their bulls never fail to breed; their cows calve and do not miscarry.
21:11 They send forth their children as a flock; their little ones dance about.
21:12 They sing to the music of tambourine and harp; they make merry to the sound of the flute.
21:13 They spend their years in prosperity and go down to the grave in peace.
21:14 Yet they say to God, "Leave us alone! We have no desire to know your ways.
21:15 Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? What would we gain by praying to him?"
21:16 But their prosperity is not in their own hands, so I stand aloof from the counsel of the wicked.
21:17 "Yet how often is the lamp of the wicked snuffed out? How often does calamity come upon them, the fate God allots in his anger?
21:18 How often are they like straw before the wind, like chaff swept away by a gale?
21:19 [It is said,] "God stores up a man's punishment for his sons." Let him repay the man himself, so that he will know it!
21:20 Let his own eyes see his destruction; let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
21:21 For what does he care about the family he leaves behind when his allotted months come to an end?
21:22 "Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since he judges even the highest?
21:23 One man dies in full vigor, completely secure and at ease,
21:24 his body well nourished, his bones rich with marrow.
21:25 Another man dies in bitterness of soul, never having enjoyed anything good.
21:26 Side by side they lie in the dust, and worms cover them both.
21:27 "I know full well what you are thinking, the schemes by which you would wrong me.
21:28 You say, "Where now is the great man's house, the tents where wicked men lived?"
21:29 Have you never questioned those who travel? Have you paid no regard to their accounts--
21:30 that the evil man is spared from the day of calamity, that he is delivered from the day of wrath?
21:31 Who denounces his conduct to his face? Who repays him for what he has done?
21:32 He is carried to the grave, and watch is kept over his tomb.
21:33 The soil in the valley is sweet to him; all men follow after him, and a countless throng goes before him.
21:34 "So how can you console me with your nonsense? Nothing is left of your answers but falsehood!"

  Acts  10

10:1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.
10:2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.
10:3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!"
10:4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.
10:5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.
10:6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea."
10:7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants.
10:8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.
10:9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.
10:10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.
10:11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.
10:12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air.
10:13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."
10:14 "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean."
10:15 The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."
10:16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.
10:17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon's house was and stopped at the gate.
10:18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.
10:19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you.
10:20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them."
10:21 Peter went down and said to the men, "I"m the one you"re looking for. Why have you come?"
10:22 The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say."
10:23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along.
10:24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.
10:25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence.
10:26 But Peter made him get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a man myself."
10:27 Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.
10:28 He said to them
10:29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?"
10:30 Cornelius answered
10:31 and said, "Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor.
10:32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea."
10:33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us."
10:34 Then Peter began to speak
10:35 but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.
10:36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.
10:37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached--
10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
10:39 "We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree,
10:40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.
10:41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen-- by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
10:42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.
10:43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."
10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
10:45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.
10:46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,
10:47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have."
10:48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
